Background

Challenge #17 represents the strengthening and implementation of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development. A stronger commitment to partnership and cooperation is needed to reach these sustainability goals b 2030. Coherent policies, an enabling environment for sustainable development at all levels by all participants, countries to citizens must be reinvigorated to ensure our earth is a better place for the future.

Finance

  • Net ODA(official Development Assistance) from member countries of the Development Assistance Committee of OECD rose by almost 9% to $142.6 billion
  • ODA as a percentage of member countries GDP rose from 30%
  • Remittances sent by international migrants to their home countries in the form of personal transfers and employee compensation have a profound effect on individuals, communities and countries
  • International remittances totaled $575 billion which is up an estimated 75%

Information and Communications Technology

  • Fixed broadband services remain largely unaffordable and unavailable throughout large segments of the world
  • Only 8.2% and .8% in developing and least developing regions
  • Global rate of internet usage was 12% lower for women than men
  • Gender gap remains the largest in the least developed countries

Capacity-Building

  • Total ODA for capacity building and national planning stood at $21 billion in 2015. Of the total, sub-Saharan Africa received $5.6 billion and South and Central Asia received $4.24 billion
  • Main recipients of assistance were the public administration, environment and energy sectors, which together were provided with $8.2 billion

Trade

  • Developing regions are showing growth in their share of international trade, with merchandise export increasing by over 13% since 2001
  • Developing regions have maintained a trade surplus
  • Fall in commodity prices can be blamed for a small decreased in merchandise exports from the least developed countries

Data, monitoring and accountability

  • Only 37 of 83 countries or areas with pertinent data had national legislation in place that compiled with all 10 Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics
  • An estimated $1 billion in statistical support annually will be necessary to effectively monitor the data requirements needed for the Sustainable Development Goals

International investments and support is needed to ensure innovative technological development, fair trade and market access, especially for developing countries.
